A captured moment of thought and reflection from a male member of the tribe.
When Himba men marry, they start wearing turbans which they don’t take off apart from when attending a funeral. Men use pointed arrow like instruments to scratch their heads under their turban, which is hinted at in this painting.
The incomplete image highlights the fading traditions, especially from the men of the tribe.
This piece is one of a series of four works which have traditional figurative subject but each is given a contemporary narrative by using space, light and a solid white backdrop to the solitary figure.
